I recently published an app that uses Swift Data as its primary data storage. The app uses concurrency, background threads, async await, and BLE communication.
Sadly, I see my app incurs many fringe crashes, involving EXC_BAD_ACCESS, KERN_INVALID_ADDRESS, EXC_BREAKPOINT, etc.
I followed these guidelines:
One ModelContainer that is stored as a global variable and used throughout.
ModelContexts are created separately for each task, changes are saved manually, and models are not passed around.
Threads with different ModelContexts might manipulate and/or read the same data simultaneously.
I was under the impression this meets the usage requirements.
I suspect perhaps the issue lies in my usage of contexts in a single await function, that might be paused and resumed on a different thread (although same execution path). Is that the case? If so, how should SwiftData be used in async scopes?
Is there anything else particularly wrong in my approach?

I'm implementing iCloud backup functionality in my web application using CloudKit JS, but I'm running into some issues. I'd appreciate any help you can provide.
Issue:
The iCloud backup feature isn't working properly in our web app. I believe I've correctly set up the Apple Developer Program registration and API token generation. While a demo implementation works perfectly with iCloud backup, our app implementation is failing.
Specifically:
"Sign in with Apple" succeeds
However, ck.getDefaultContainer().setupAuth() returns null
In the working demo, setupAuth() returns a proper value
Even after logging in through the redirect URL provided in the "421 Misdirected Request" error response and executing setupAuth(), it still returns null
I've essentially copied the working demo code directly, so I suspect the issue might be related to token generation, permissions, or account configuration.
Questions:
Could you provide detailed step-by-step instructions for implementing iCloud backup in a web application? I've noticed there are configuration items in the Developer Console and Certificates console, so I may have missed something in one of these areas.
Based on the symptoms described, what are the possible causes for setupAuth() returning null in CloudKit JS? Could configuration issues be indirectly causing this, or is it more likely a timing issue or SDK coding problem?
Specifically regarding the 421 error and redirect flow - is there something in the configuration that could cause setupAuth() to return null even after successful authentication through the redirect?

The app works on a local db but when I try to make it work with iCloud I get errors that I don't understand.

Hi,
I'm having trouble implementing iCloud Drive in my app. I've already taken the obvious steps, including enabling iCloud Documents in Xcode and selecting a container. This container is correctly specified in my code, and in theory, everything should work.
The data generated by my app should be saved to iCloud Drive in addition to local storage. The data does get stored in the Files app, but the automatic syncing to iCloud Drive doesn’t work as expected.
I’ve also considered updating my .entitlements file.
Since I’m at a loss, I’m reaching out for help maybe I’ve overlooked something important that's causing it not to work. If anyone has an idea, please let me know.

Trying to support undo & redo in an app that utilizes Swift Data and as with anything other than provided simplistic Apple demo examples the experience is not great.
The problem:
Im trying to build functionality that allows users to add items to an item group, where item and item group have a many-to-many relationship e.g. item group can hold many items and items can appear in multiple groups.
When trying to do so with relatively simple setup of either adding or removing item group from items relationship array, I am pretty consistently met with a hard crash after performing undo & redo. Sometimes it works the first few undo & redos but 95% of the time would crash on the first one.
Could not cast value of type 'Swift.Optional<Any>' (0x20a676be0) to 'Swift.Array<App.CodableStructModel>' (0x207a2bc08).
Where CodableStructModel is a Codable Value type inside Item.
Adding and removing this relationship should be undoable & redoable as typical for Mac interaction and is "supported" by SwiftData by default, meaning that the developer has to actively either wholly opt out of undo support in their modelContainer setup or do it on a per action scale with the only thing I know of:

General rant on SwiftData:
Random crashes, inconsistencies, random cryptic errors thrown by the debugger and general lack of production level stability.
Each update breaks something new and there is very little guidance and communication from the Swift Data team on how to adapt and more importantly consideration for developers that have adopted Swift Data.
If SwiftData is not ready for production, it would go a long way to clearly communicate that and mark it as Beta product.
I'm working on a macOS app with a Safari web extension. I'm trying to share a SwiftData model between devices using CloudKit synchronization. I am able to get synchronization in the main app on the same device, CloudKit sync works correctly — changes appear in the CloudKit Dashboard under com.apple.coredata.cloudkit.zone.
However, in the Safari App Extension, data is saved locally and persists across launches, but never syncs to CloudKit.
I have followed the recommended practices for configuring the App Group and entitlements, but the issue persists.
Questions:
Is there an official limitation preventing Safari App Extensions from connecting to the CloudKit daemon (cloudd)?
If not, what entitlements or configuration changes are required for a Safari App Extension to successfully sync with CloudKit?
Is the xpc_error=159 from bootstrap_look_up() a known sandbox restriction for this extension type?
Any guidance from Apple engineers or others who have successfully used CloudKit from a Safari App Extension would be appreciated.
What I’ve confirmed:

I use SwiftData in my iOS app. The schema is unversioned and consists of a single model. I've been modifying the model for almost two years now and relying on automatic database migrations. I had no problems for all that time, but now trying to add a property to the model or even remove a property from the model results in an error which seems like SwiftData is no longer capable of performing an automatic migration.

I'm experiencing a persistent issue with CloudKit sharing in my iOS application. When attempting to present a UICloudSharingController, I receive the error message "Unknown client: ChoreOrganizer" in the console.

I'm writing some tests to confirm the behavior of my app. White creating a model actor to delete objects I realized that ModelContext.model(for:) does return objects that are deleted. I was able to reproduces this with this minimal test case:

Here I create a new context, insert an model and save it.
The test modelForIdAfterDelete does fail, as result still contains the deleted object.
I also tried to check #expect(result!.isDeleted), but it is also false.
With the second test I use a FetchDescriptor to retrieve the object by ID and it correctly returns nil.
Shouldn't both methods use a consistent behavior?

I'm trying to work on an iPadOS and macOS app that will rely on the document-based system to create some kind of orientation task to follow.
Let say task1.myfile will be a check point regulation from NYC to SF and task2.myfile will be a visit as many key location as you can in SF.
The file represent the specific landmark location and rules of the game.
And once open, I will be able to read KML/GPS file to evaluate their score based with the current task.
But opened GPS files does not have to be stored in the task file itself, it stay alongside.
I wanted to use that scenario to experiment with SwiftData (I'm a long time CoreData user, I even wrote my own WebDAV based persistent store back in the day), and so, mix both on file and in memory persistent store, with distribution based on object class.
With CoreData it would have been possible, but I do not see how to achieve that with SwiftData and DocumentGroup integration.
Any idea how to do that?

My problem is that CKRecord are not deleted once I reinstall the app: when I reinstall the app and try to delete a CloudKit record, the method is executed successfully (error is nil) but the records are still in CloudKit Dashboards.

We are currently implementing a custom iCloud sync for our macOS and iOS apps using CloudKit. Syncing works fine as long as the number of record sends is relatively small.
But when we test with a large number of changes ( 80,000+ CKRecords ) we start running into problems.
Our sending strategy is very conservative to avoid rate limits:
We send records sequentially in batches of 250 records
With about 2 seconds pause between operations
Records are small and contain no assets (assets are uploaded separately)
At some point we start receiving:
“Database commit size exceeds limit”
After that, CloudKit begins returning rate-limit errors with retryAfter-Information in the error.
We wait for the retry time and try again, but from this moment on, nothing progresses anymore. Every subsequent attempt fails.
We could not find anything in the official documentation regarding such a “commit size” limit or what triggers this failure state.
So my questions are:
Are there undocumented limits on the total number of records that can exist in an iCloud database (private or shared)?
Is there a maximum volume of record modifications a container can accept within a certain timeframe, even if operations are split into small batches with pauses?
Is it possible that sending large numbers of records in a row can temporarily or permanently “stall” a CloudKit container?
Any insights or experiences would be greatly appreciated.

I have implemented CKSyncEngine synchronization, and it works well. I can update data on one device and see the changes propagate to another device quickly. However, the initial sync when a user downloads the app on a new device is a significant issue for both me and my users.
One problem is that the sync engine fetches deletion events from the server. On a new device, the local database is empty, so these deletions are essentially no-ops. This would not be a big problem if there were only a few records or if it was fast. I measured the initial sync and found that there are 150 modified records and 62,168 deletions. Counting these alone takes over five minutes, even without processing them. The deletions do nothing because the local database has nothing to delete, yet they still add a significant delay.
I understand that the sync engine ensures consistency across all devices, but five minutes of waiting with the app open just to insert a small number of records is excessive. The problem would be worse if there were tens of thousands of new records to insert, since downloading and saving the data would take even longer.
This leads to a poor user experience. Users open the app and see data being populated for several minutes, or they are stuck on a screen that says the data is being synchronized with iCloud.
I am wondering if there is a way to make the sync engine ignore deletion events when the state serialization is nil. Alternatively, is there a recommended method for handling initial synchronization more efficiently?
One idea I considered is storing all the data as a backup in iCloud Documents, along with the state serialization at that point in time. When a user opens the app for the first time, I could download the file, extract the data, and set the state serialization to the saved value. I am not sure if this would work. I do not know if state serialization is tied to the device or if it only represents the point where the sync engine left off. My guess is that it might reference some local device storage.
I am not sure what else to try. I could fetch all data using CloudKit, create the sync engine with an empty state serialization, and let it fetch everything again, but that would still take a long time.
My records are very small, mostly a date when something happened and an ID referencing the parent. Since the app tracks watched episodes, I only store the date the user watched the episode and the ID of that episode.

In my SwiftUI / SwiftData / Cloudkit app which is a series of lists, I have a model object called Project which contains an array of model objects called subprojects:

The user will select a project from a list, which will generate a list of subprojects in another list, and if they select a subproject, it will generate a list categories and if the user selects a category it will generate another list of child objects owned by category and on and on.
This is the pattern in my app, I'm constantly passing arrays of model objects that are the children of other model objects throughout the program, and I need the user to be able to add and remove things from them.
My initial approach was to pass these arrays as bindings so that I'd be able to mutate them. This worked for the most part but there were two problems: it was a lot of custom binding code and when I had to unwrap these bindings using init?(_ base: Binding<Value?>), my program would crash if one of these arrays became nil (it's some weird quirk of that init that I don't understand at al).
As I'm still learning the framework, I had not realized that the @model macro had automatically made my model objects observable, so I decided to remove the bindings and simply pass the arrays by reference, and while it seems these references will carry the most up to date version of the array, you cannot mutate them unless you have access to the parent and mutate it like such:
project.subcategories?.removeAll { $0 == subcategory }
project.subcategories?.append(subcategory)
This is weirding me out because you can't unwrap subcategories before you try to mutate the array, it has to be done like above. In my code, I like to unwrap all optionals at the moment that I need the values stored in them and if not, I like to post an error to the user. Isn't that the point of optionals? So I don't understand why it's like this and ultimately am wondering if I'm using the correct design pattern for what I'm trying to accomplish or if I'm missing something? Any input would be much appreciated!

I am using SwiftData and cloudkit and I am having an extremely persistent bug.
I am building an education section on a app that's populated with lessons via a local JSON file. I don't need this lesson data to sync to cloudkit as the lessons are static, just need them imported into swiftdata so I've tried to use the modelcontainer like this:

However, what happens is that I still get Lesson and MiniLesson record types on cloudkit and for some reason as well, whenever I update the data models or delete and reinstall the app on simulator, the lessons duplicate (what seems to happen is that a set of lessons comes from the JSON file as it should), and then 1-2 seconds later, an older set of lessons gets synced from cloudkit.
I can delete the old set of lessons if I just delete the lessons and mini lessons record types, but if I update the data model again, this error reccurrs.
Sorry, I don't know if I managed to explain this well but essentially I just want to stop the lessons and minilessons from being uploaded to cloudkit as I think this will fix the problem. Am I doing something wrong with the code?
I work on an app that saves data to the Documents folder in the users iCloud Drive. This uses the iCloud -> iCloud Documents capability with a standard container.
We've noticed an issue where a user will delete the apps data by doing to Settings > {Name} > iCloud > Storage > App Name > select "delete data from iCloud", and then our app can no longer write to or create the Documents folder.
Once that happens, we get this error:

Reopen the app and repeat steps 1-2
Observe error on MainViewController+Document.swift:59
Deleting and reinstalling the app doesn't seem to help.

I have a CoreData model with two configuration - but several problems. Notably the viewContext only shows data from the .private configuration. Here is the setup:
The private configuration holds entities, for example, User and Course and the shared one holds entities, for example, Player and League. I setup the NSPersistentStoreDescriptions to use the same container but with a databaseScope of .private/.shared and with the configuration of "Private"/"Shared". loadPersistentStores() does not report an error.
If I try container.initializeCloudKitSchema() only the .private configuration produces CKRecord types. If I create a companion app using one configuration (w/ all entities) the schema initialization creates all CKRecord types AND I can populate some data in the .private and a created CKShare. I see that data in the CloudKit dashboard.
If I axe the companion app and run the real thing w/ two configurations, the viewContext only has the .private data. Why?
If when querying history I use NSPersistentHistoryTransaction.fetchRequest I get a nil return when using two configurations (but non-nil when using one).
If an app is using top-level models, meaning they exist outside the VersionedSchema enum, is it safe to keep them outside of the VersionedSchema enum and use a migration plan for simple migrations. Moving the models within the VersionedSchema enum I believe would change the identity of the models and result in data being lost, although correct me if I'm wrong in that statement.
The need presently is just to add another variable to the model and then set that variable within the init function:
var updateId = UUID()
The app is presently in TestFlight although I'd like to preserve data for users that are currently using the app.
The data within SwiftData is synchronized with CloudKit and so I'd also like to avoid any impact to synchronization.
Any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated.

I have an app (I use it for logging which books I've given away), and I could either add a bunch of things to the app, or I could have another app (possibly a CLI tool) to generate some reports I'd like.
