iOS Network Signal Strength
This issue has cropped up many times here on DevForums. Someone recently opened a DTS tech support incident about it, and I used that as an opportunity to post a definitive response here. If you have questions or comments about this, start a new thread and tag it with Network so that I see it. Share and Enjoy — Quinn “The Eskimo!” @ Developer Technical Support @ Apple let myEmail = "eskimo" + "1" + "@" + "apple.com" iOS Network Signal Strength The iOS SDK has no general-purpose API that returns Wi-Fi or cellular signal strength in real time. Given that this has been the case for more than 10 years, it’s safe to assume that it’s not an accidental omission but a deliberate design choice. For information about the Wi-Fi APIs that are available on iOS, see TN3111 iOS Wi-Fi API overview. Network performance Most folks who ask about this are trying to use the signal strength to estimate network performance. This is a technique that I specifically recommend against. That’s because it produces both false positives and false negatives: The network signal might be weak and yet your app has excellent connectivity. For example, an iOS device on stage at WWDC might have terrible WWAN and Wi-Fi signal but that doesn’t matter because it’s connected to the Ethernet. The network signal might be strong and yet your app has very poor connectivity. For example, if you’re on a train, Wi-Fi signal might be strong in each carriage but the overall connection to the Internet is poor because it’s provided by a single over-stretched WWAN. The only good way to determine whether connectivity is good is to run a network request and see how it performs. If you’re issuing a lot of requests, use the performance of those requests to build a running estimate of how well the network is doing. Indeed, Apple practices what we preach here: This is exactly how HTTP Live Streaming works. Remember that network performance can change from moment to moment. The user’s train might enter or leave a tunnel, the user might step into a lift, and so on. If you build code to estimate the network performance, make sure it reacts to such changes. Keeping all of the above in mind, iOS 26 beta has two new APIs related to this issue: Network framework now offers a linkQuality property. See this post for my take on how to use this effectively. The WirelessInsights framework can notify you of anticipated WWAN condition changes. But what about this code I found on the ’net? Over the years various folks have used various unsupported techniques to get around this limitation. If you find code on the ’net that, say, uses KVC to read undocumented properties, or grovels through system logs, or walks the view hierarchy of the status bar, don’t use it. Such techniques are unsupported and, assuming they haven’t broken yet, are likely to break in the future. But what about Hotspot Helper? Hotspot Helper does have an API to read Wi-Fi signal strength, namely, the signalStrength property. However, this is not a general-purpose API. Like the rest of Hotspot Helper, this is tied to the specific use case for which it was designed. This value only updates in real time for networks that your hotspot helper is managing, as indicated by the isChosenHelper property. But what about MetricKit? MetricKit is so cool. Amongst other things, it supports the MXCellularConditionMetric payload, which holds a summary of the cellular conditions while your app was running. However, this is not a real-time signal strength value. But what if I’m working for a carrier? This post is about APIs in the iOS SDK. Socket Becomes Unresponsive in Local Connectivity Extension After Lock Screen
I’m developing an app designed for hospital environments, where public internet access may not be available. The app includes two components: the main app and a Local Connectivity Extension. Both rely on persistent TCP socket connections to communicate with a local server. We’re observing a recurring issue where the extension’s socket becomes unresponsive every 1–3 hours, but only when the device is on the lock screen, even if the main app remains in the foreground. When the screen is not locked, the connection is stable and no disconnections occur. ❗ Issue Details: • What’s going on: The extension sends a keep-alive ping packet every second, and the server replies with a pong and a system time packet. • The bug: The server stops receiving keep alive packets from the extension.  • On the server, we detect about 30 second gap on the server, a gap that shows no packets were received by the extension. This was confirmed via server logs and Wireshark).  • On the extension, from our logs there was no gap in sending packets. From it’s perspective, all packets were sent with no error.  • Because no packet are being received by the server, no packets will be sent to the extension. Eventually the server closes the connection due to keep-alive timeout.  • FYI we log when the NEAppPushProvider subclass sleeps and it did NOT go to sleep while we were debugging. 🧾 Example Logs: Extension log: 2025-03-24 18:34:48.808 sendKeepAliveRequest() 2025-03-24 18:34:49.717 sendKeepAliveRequest() 2025-03-24 18:34:50.692 sendKeepAliveRequest() ... // continuous sending of the ping packet to the server, no problems here 2025-03-24 18:35:55.063 sendKeepAliveRequest() 2025-03-24 18:35:55.063 keepAliveTimer IS TIME OUT... in CoreService. // this is triggered because we did not receive any packets from the server 2025-03-24 18:34:16.298 No keep-alive received for 16 seconds... connection ID=95b3... // this shows that there has been no packets being received by the extension ... 2025-03-24 18:34:30.298 Connection timed out on keep-alive. connection ID=95b3... // eventually closes due to no packets being received 2025-03-24 18:34:30.298 Remote Subsystem Disconnected {name=iPhone|Replica-Ext|...} ✅ Observations: • The extension process continues running and logging keep-alive attempts. • However, network traffic stops reaching the server, and no inbound packets are received by the extension. • It looks like the socket becomes silently suspended or frozen, without being properly closed or throwing an error. ❓Questions: • Do you know why this might happen within a Local Connectivity Extension, especially under foreground conditions and locked ? • Is there any known system behavior that might cause the socket to be suspended or blocked in this way after running for a few hours? Any insights or recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Qt IOS Application Extension - Packet Tunnel for Custom VPN Functionality
I am trying to create an application extension which provides vpn functionality over network extension with packet-tunnel. But when I enable vpn it doesn't call related callbacks. Currently, i didn't find any example in qt documentation. So I read the documents of ios and qt and trying to find the right path. We don't want to store this data locally on the phone or within the app but rather have it securely transferred to a safe SFTP server. When adding a VPN configuration, the Settings app doesn't continue with the configuration process
Sometimes when adding a VPN configuration, it just redirects to the Settings app and doesn’t continue with the rest of the configuration process like prompting for passcode. But it proceeds as normal after the 2nd or 3rd try. This issue is occurring on iOS 18.5 build 22F5068a but it has been a problem over several versions now. Feedback ID: FB17458055

How to avoid the "Allow XYZ to find devices on local networks" warning when creating a local-system-only Bonjour service and browser?
I'm writing an application that implements a Bonjour service and browser for the purpose of connecting to Logic Pro and interacting with a MIDI Device Script. Because it's connecting to Logic Pro running on the same system as the application, the service and browser do not need to access anything else on the local network. I'm creating the service and browser with calls like this: err = DNSServiceRegister( &serviceRef, 0, kDNSServiceInterfaceIndexLocalOnly, "MyService", "_osc._udp", "local", nullptr, 52854, txtLen, txtRecord, static_cast<DNSServiceRegisterReply>(myCallback), context ); err = DNSServiceBrowse( &browserRef, 0, kDNSServiceInterfaceIndexLocalOnly, "_osc._udp", nullptr, static_cast<DNSServiceBrowseReply>(browserCallback), context ); Despite the fact that I'm passing in kDNSServiceInterfaceIndexLocalOnly for the network interface, it still triggers an "Allow 'Application' to find devices on local networks?" permissions prompt. How can I avoid that prompt? It is both a significant failure point (in case users don't notice it or click 'Don't Allow' by mistake) but it may also scare them away, since it strongly implies my application is scanning devices on the local network, even though it's doing no such thing!

Iphone 16 is not connecting to WiFi7 AP with MLO Suiteb encryption
Issue summary: Iphone 16 is not connecting to WiFi7 AP with MLO Suiteb encryption. Furuno AP(EW750) is sending EAPOL M1 message, but Iphone16 is not responding with EAPOL M2 message, Hence Iphone16 is unable to connect to Qualcomm based AP with MLO suiteb encryption. Issue impact: All the Iphone16 users cannot connect to WiFi7 AP with MLO suiteb encryption globally. Predominantly, Iphone users tend to connect to more secured wifi networks using WPA3 suiteb encryption, hence many of the iphone users will experience the connectivity issue significantly. Topology: AP Hardware: Furuno WiFi7 AP(EW770) The Furuno WiFi7 AP uses Miami IPQ5332 with waikiki radio QCN9274 AP software: SPF12.2 CSU3 IPhone16 software: (18.3.1 or 18.5 ) Iphone16 wifi capabilities: 802.11 b/a/g/n/ac/ax/be Radius server details: Radius server: Laptop running with Ubuntu Radius package: 3.0.26dfsggit20220223.1.00ed0241fa-0ubuntu3.4 Version: 3.0.26 Steps: Power on the Wi-Fi 7 Access Point with the Miami chipset, and flash it with the SPF 12.2 CSU3 image. Enable both 5 GHz and 6 GHz radios on the AP. Enable MLO (Multi-Link Operation) in 6Ghz &amp; 5Ghz, set MLD address different from radio address and configure Suite-B (192-bit) encryption On the Linux laptop, set up the RADIUS server with EAP-TLS authentication method. Once the above steps are completed, take the iPhone 16 and follow the steps below to install the RADIUS client certificates on the device. On the sniffer laptop, switch the Wi-Fi adapter to monitor mode, configure the required channel, and begin packet capture. Check SSID is broadcasting, then connect the iPhone 16 to . Verify if the client (iPhone 16) connects to the SSID using WPA3-Enterprise, MLO, and Suite-B encryption by checking the wireless capture on both the AP and iPhone sides. Support needed from Apple team: We would request Apple team to analyse and enable the IPhone16 users to connect to advanced security WPA3 Suiteb by resolving the issue. Below is our analysis and observation for your reference. As per IEEE, MLD mac address can be set to the same or different from radio address, Iphone16 is not accepting EAPOL M1 message if source address(MLD) is different from radio address. IPhone16 is accepting EAPOL M1 if the source address(MLD) is set to the same as the radio address and responds with M2 message IPhone16 is not accepting EAPOL M1 if source address(MLD) set to different from radio address and fails to respond with M2 message

Network Content Filter based on packets
Hi, I built a system that can detect and block Short Form Videos like Instagram Reels and Youtube Shorts. It works by connecting the iphone to a VPN and then do statistics on network packets (no decryption). I was wondering the feasibility of porting this to run on device. Functionality wise I would need: packet interception, packet drop, DNS query interception. I saw that Content filter providers could be something to look into, but then I read an article of how you would have to have a managed device which is not ideal for the end user. New to apple development, the lack of snippets and code examples is confusing.

HTTP Requests via Local Network without Wifi
Hi, I am trying to create an App which connects to a Device via Wifi and then has to do some HTTP Requests. Connecting to the Wifi is working properly but when I try to make an HTTP API Call I get the response that the Domain is unavailable (No Internet Connection). I created the App in Flutter on Android everything works perfectly. The packages are all iOS Compatible. But in Safari the URL works so it is probably a permission Issue. I have the Following permissions granted: NSAppTransportSecurity NSBonjourServices NSLocalNetworkUsageDescription I even have Multicast Networking When I test the App I get asked to grant the access to local Network which I am granting. I don´t know what I should do next can somebody help? Feel free to ask for more Information

WiFi aware demo paring issue
I am developing a program on my chip and attempting to establish a connection with the WiFi Aware demo app launched by iOS 26. Currently, I am encountering an issue during the pairing phase. If I am the subscriber of the service and successfully complete the follow-up frame exchange of pairing bootstrapping, I see the PIN code displayed by iOS. Question 1: How should I use this PIN code? Question 2: Subsequently, I need to negotiate keys with iOS through PASN. What should I use as the password for the PASN SAE process? Content filter installed but not running
We have a content filter system extension as part of our macOS app. The filter normally works correctly, activation and deactivation works as expected but occasionally we see an issue when the content filter is activated. When this issues occurs, the filter activation appears to behave correctly, no errors are reported. Using "systemextensionsctl list" we see the filter is labelled as "[activated enabled]". However, the installed content filter executable does not run. We have seen this issue on macOS 15.3 and later and on the beta macOS 26.1 RC. It happens only occasionally but when it does there is no indication as to why the executable is not running. There are no crash logs or errors in launchd logs. Both rebooting and deactivating/activating the filter do not resolve the issue. The only fix appears to be completely uninstalling the app (including content filter) and reinstalling. I have raised a FB ticket, FB20866080. Does anyone have any idea what could cause this?

Network Service Order for IoT Ethernet device
I am making a USB attached IoT device that follows the Matter approach to connectivity (IP/mDNS/DHCP). I am having conflicts with it as it appears to MacOS as an Ethernet adapter and this is causing it to be assigned as a "default" route, interfering with routing when my Mac is connected to NAT based WiFi. I'd like to be able to hint to MacOS & iPadOS that this is not a routable private network, the subnet should be respected and a default route should not be assigned to it, otherwise the order of the device connection is used by the IP routing tables and I am concerned my non-routable private network will initialize before Wifi and block NAT based internet connectivity. How can I hint to MacOS/iPadOS "this is not a routable private network, this is not a NAT, do not assign me a default route beyond the subnet I have provided you."

Determine outgoing flow source IPs without allowing data leakage using NEFilterDataProvider
I'm looking for help with a network extension filtering issue. Specifically, we have a subclass of NEFilterDataProvider that is used to filter flows based upon a set of rules, including source IP and destination IP. We've run into an issue where the source IP is frequently 0.0.0.0 (or the IPv6 equivalent) on outgoing flows. This has made it so rules based upon source IP don't work. This is also an issue as we report these connections, but we're lacking critical data. We were able to work around the issue somewhat by keeping a list of flows that we allow that we periodically check to see if the source IP is available, and then report after it becomes available. We also considered doing a "peekBytes" to allow a bit of data to flow and then recheck the flow, but we don't want to allow data leakage on connections that should be blocked because of the source IP. Is there a way to force the operating system or network extension frameworks to determine the source IP for an outbound flow without allowing any bytes to flow to the network? STEPS TO REPRODUCE Create a network filtering extension for filtering flows using NEFilterDataProvider See that when handleNewFlow: is called, the outgoing flow lacks the source IP (is 0.0.0.0) in most cases There is this post that is discussing a similar question, though for a slightly different reason. I imagine the answer to this and the other post will be related, at least as far as NEFilterDataProvider:handleNewFlow not having source IP is considered. Thanks!

Multipeer Connectivity stopped working between iPad simulators
We have an iPad application that utilizes Multipeer Connectivity to enable local communication between devices running a copy of our app. Until recently, we were able to test this functionality in the Xcode simulator without any issues. We could easily set up multiple simulators and have them all communicate with each other. However, recently, either due to an upgrade to Xcode or MacOS, this functionality ceased working in the simulator. Surprisingly, it still functions perfectly on physical devices. If we reboot the development computer and launch the simulator immediately after the reboot (without building and sending from Xcode, but running the existing code on the device), the issue resolves. However, the moment we generate a new build and send it to the simulator from Xcode, the multipeer functionality stops working again in the simulator. The simulators won’t reconnect until a reboot of the physical Mac hardware hosting the simulator. We’ve tried the usual troubleshooting steps, such as downgrading Xcode, deleting simulators and recreating them, cleaning the build folder, and deleting derived data, but unfortunately, none of these solutions have worked. The next step is to attempt to use a previous version of MacOS (15.3) and see if that helps, but I’d prefer to avoid this if possible. SSH app
Hello. I would like to develop an application that sends SSH commands via my phone to the server. I know that applications of this type exist, but they are not suitable for my use as a blind person who uses a screen reader. I hope you can help me find libraries that will assist me in development, or ready-made, open-source projects that I can develop and modify if necessary. Thank you in advance.
