Safari Web Extension - ES6 Module Imports Not Working After Enabling "type": "module"
I'm trying to use ES6 module imports in a Safari Web Extension, but despite enabling "type": "module" in the manifest, imports are not functioning as expected. Specifically when working with a project structure that includes multiple directories. A root directory containing the manifest.json and main entry point scripts A scripts/ folder housing core functionality modules A common/ directory for shared utilities, constants, and helper functions A background.js file in the root that attempts to import from these various directories When trying to import modules from the scripts/ and common/ directories into my background.js, I'm encountering complete import failures. How can I correctly implement cross-directory module imports in Safari Web Extensions?

Install Safari Extension fails with "Unable to download App" and "Operation not permitted" in log
We have a Safari extension that's been up on the App Store for about 18 months with no apparent issues. This week, however, while working on an update, we uninstalled the production version on our test machines and installed a developer version. When we had some issues, we tried to go back to the production version downloaded from the App Store, but we get an pop saying "Unable to download App." In the log, the most obviously relevant error is 'Operation not permitted'. This occurs on several machines and different logins on those machines in both norma and safe modes. However, on another machine that never had one installed, we could still install the app from the app store, so I suspect there is something left behind that needs to be removed, but I don't know what. FWIW, I see the download directory getting created under /Applications, but it is promptly removed when the failure popup appears. Any suggestions?

iOS Safari - Input element is unresponsive when modifying DOM via a touch event (touchstart, touchmove, touchend, etc)
This is a really strange issue on iOS Safari. Under certain conditions a basic input element will not be focusable or show the on screen keyboard. I can reproduce the issue with a very simple HTML file by dynamically adding an anchor element with an href during a touch event. If you add a different element or an anchor without an href, there is no issue. Similarly, if you apply the same listener to a click event there is no issue. Behavior of Safari in HTTP/2 communication
I want to confirm the specifications and behavior of Safari. We have a system built on Microsoft Azure that uses Azure AD B2C for authentication. When we logging in, there is a phone authentication feature where a call is made to the registered phone number. However, this phone authentication does not work properly only on iPhone's Safari. The specific situation is listed below: When performing phone authentication on iPhone's Safari, a call is made from Azure AD B2C, and pressing the # button on the Safari screen can be done. But then, it transitions to an error screen. We tried multiple iPhone devices and multiple iOS versions, but the result was the same. But when accessing the system on a PC, and performing phone authentication, it works without any errors. Also when we use browsers other than Safari (for example, Google Chrome and Firefox) on the iPhone, the phone authentication works without any errors, too. Even with Safari, if the device displaying the login screen and the device making the call are different, phone authentication works without any errors, too.(it fails if they are the same device). We reached out Microsoft about this issue, and they responded that: The Azure resource called FrontDoor at the front end of Azure AD B2C supports the HTTP/2 protocol, and HTTP/2 protocol is used in communication with Safari. In Safari's HTTP/2 communication, when a call is received while the screen is displayed, a reset packet is sent to the web server (in this case, the web server is FrontDoor). This interrupts the session, causing a session termination error on the Azure AD B2C side, and phone authentication fails. Therefore, we would like to ask you the following two points: In HTTP/2 communication, does the Safari browser send a reset packet to the web server when it receives a phone call? If so, what is the cause of this behavior? And are there any measures to prevent the reset packet from being sent?

Notification sound (Web or PWA)
Good morning fellow developers, For a while i am struggeling with providing sound to my users on IOS (Safari on Mac is no problem and every other device is not a problem) (we have an existing phone system and made a chat as well), the case is very simple: the notification sound is only for users who are logged in and online for chat. i have tried multiple things: Audio play with javascript (start with mute, play when user clicks a button so the sound is familiar, play when user clicks a button and directly pause it and continue when needed) PWA: the dashboard has been made available as pwa and notifications using google firebase. The popup does show for notifcations to be allowed (and receiving the notifications does work on any other device) But any IOS device cannot register. The information i find is that notifications were supported with 16.4 or higher but also have been deprecated around IOS 17, auto play is not allowed. We have an app in development for our product as well were we will have a notification which will handle this, but that is not the solution we can use now. Long story, short question: is it still somehow possible to push a notification to the user when using the PWA or play a sound in the browser (based on an ajax function). The app/website wont be in the background, so it will always be on the screen. Languages we use: html/javascript (mostly vanilla)/php

LocalOverride Request regular expression broke dev tools
Hello, I'm using Safari 18.2 on Sonoma 14.6.1. I was using the Developer Tools to do a Local Request Override in the Source tab for a CSS file that had a changing query string. I thought I had a good regular expression to catch all variants, but apparently it was too generic and possibly wrong, and made both Source and Network tabs no longer work in my Safari. The regular expression I entered for the Local Request Override was: //build/style.css(?.*)?$ Now my dev tools is broken to the extent that the Source and Network tabs no longer work. The slide-out panel on Source that shows Breakpoints, LocalOverrides, etc no longer shows. The toggle for it does, but does nothing now. UI in general looks a little wack on both tabs. So, since I can't turn off the Local Request Override, I've been trying to locate where Safari may have stored it to manually delete it. Not having a lot of luck on that front. It seems to me that Safari was unable to escape my regular expression correctly and it then causes additional issue. Just a guess though. Any advice or help in getting Safari Source & Network working again / manual removal of the LocalOverride would be greatly appreciated. I'm fluent in OSX and Linux, but grep was not much help surfacing anything that worked. Thanks in Advance, possibly a Safari bug as well.

Apple Pay on Web in Cross-Origin iFrame: Merchant Validation Failure Due to Referrer Header Reliance (Custom API Integration)
Hi Apple Developer Community and Support, We are implementing Apple Pay on the Web and are encountering a persistent issue with merchant validation when the ApplePaySession is initiated from a JavaScript application running within a cross-origin iframe. Our Setup: Top-Level Domain: https://application.my.com/ (where the Apple Pay button is displayed, and the iframe is embedded) iFrame Content Origin: https://cashier.my.com/ (Our custom JavaScript application that handles the Apple Pay integration and directly calls our Payment Service Provider's (PSP) API for merchant validation). iFrame allow attribute: The iframe correctly includes allow="payment *". The Problem: When a user clicks the Apple Pay button, the ApplePaySession is successfully created and the Apple Pay sheet opens in Safari iOS. This suggests the browser recognizes the allow="payment *" attribute and allows the API calls. However, during the session.onvalidatemerchant callback, our JavaScript code makes a direct API call to our PSP (Nuvei)'s endpoint. This call consistently fails with an "Invalid domain name!" error, and the Apple Pay sheet then shows "Payment Not Completed." PSP's Diagnosis: Our PSP (Nuvei) has investigated and stated that for this specific endpoint (getAppleValidationApiFlow.do), "there is no explicit way to pass domain to the endpoint and domain for which session is issued is based on 'Referer' header." Our Question for Apple: Given that Safari 17+ now supports allow="payment" for cross-origin iframes to enable Apple Pay APIs, we have the following questions: What is Apple's official guidance or expectation regarding the Referer header for ApplePaySession.onvalidatemerchant calls when the ApplePaySession is instantiated from a cross-origin iframe? Is it expected that the Referer header for calls originating from the iFrame will always be the iFrame's origin? Does Apple's merchant validation process (when the PSP calls apple-pay-gateway.apple.com/paymentservices/startSession) itself rely on or interpret the Referer from the initial client-to-PSP call? Are there recommended best practices or standard approaches for PSP integrations in this cross-origin iFrame scenario to ensure the Referer validation (or equivalent domain validation) is correctly satisfied? We're trying to understand if our PSP's specific reliance on the Referer for this validation is a standard requirement implicitly set by Apple for this flow, or if there are other architectural approaches that should allow this scenario to work seamlessly. Embedded Power BI reports crashes in mobile layout using iOS
We're embedding the Power BI reports into our portal by using JS library. While testing them, we found that mobile layout of the reports don't work as we expect on iOS devices (tested in Chrome and Safari). There are two principals issues: 1) the site is automatically refreshed when the users filter the data (we reduced them to lower expression) and 2) the site also crashes after a while using the dashboard by applying different filters.

Smart App Banner has changed background color
We have a Smart App Banner (including App Clip) on our website and have noticed today that the banner's background color has changed. It no longer has the default white background and blue button color, instead it has a background color that matches our page's background, and even the color of the button has changed. What's interesting is that we have not triggered this change at all. The colors seemingly changed by themselves. Looking at the Apple Documentation, no customization options are mentioned. Searching the web, the theme-color meta tag is mentioned in relation to this, however we haven't even included that tag on our page. What is triggering this color change then and how can we influence it?

iOS 18 Safari and WKWebview, "NotSupportedError" issue when playing videos
WKWebview of iOS 18 includes Safari browser. When playing videos, some videos show "NotSupportedError: The operation is not supported.", but it is normal on iOS15 devices. Details of SFExtensionProfileKey?
Hi, I’m working with the SFExtensionProfileKey in my Safari Web Extension. As I understand it, this key is to get the UUID of the profile currently in use. However, it seems to be missing (no key in userInfo) when the default profile is active. Also, I haven’t found any API to get a profile’s human-readable name or list all available profiles. Could someone clarify: If the value of SFExtensionProfileKey is absent, can I safely assume the default profile is in use? Is there a supported way to get a profile’s display name? Does Safari expose an API for getting all profiles? Thanks in advance for your insights!

WKWebView occasionally shows white screen and persists until app restart
I am encountering an intermittent issue with WKWebView in my iOS app. The problem occurs infrequently, but when it does, the WKWebView consistently displays a white screen and remains in this state until the app is forcefully terminated and relaunched. To provide more context, here are the key characteristics of the issue: The white screen problem occurs sporadically and is not easily reproducible. The WKWebView remains unresponsive despite attempts to interact with it. Reloading the webpage or navigating to a different URL does not resolve the white screen issue. The problem persists until the app is terminated and relaunched. This issue is specific to the WKWebView; other components of the app function correctly. The WKWebView renders normally, and the main document synchronously loads resources both offline and online without any issues. The bridge and JavaScript execution also work as expected. However, when interacting with the WKWebView, it becomes unresponsive to user clicks, and the web inspector fails to respond. Additionally, asynchronous network requests also do not receive any response. The problem occurs exclusively on HTTPS pages, whereas HTTP pages load without any issues. Other components, such as workers, function correctly. addUserScript injection during WKWebView creation is effective, and evaluateJavaScript during the page loading process works as expected. However, when the document becomes unresponsive, executing evaluateJavaScript only triggers the callback after the WKWebView is destroyed. I have discovered a reliable method to reproduce the white screen issue in WKWebView. This method involves the following steps and conditions: Create a WKWebView instance. Load an HTML page using the loadRequest method(https url request). Before the WKWebView is attached to the UI (not yet visible to the user), call the evaluateJavaScript function. This issue has occurred in almost all iOS versions, including the latest iOS 17.x version.

Detect whether the user is using Safari or Safari Technology Preview?
Hi, I’m trying to detect whether my Safari Web Extension is running in Safari or Safari Technology Preview. Is there a reliable way to do that? I can get the executable path of the parent process using proc_pidpath(). However, unlike Chrome or Firefox, Safari extensions run under /sbin/launchd as the parent process, not the responsible process (browser’s binary). In this scenario, I need the executable path of the actual browser process, but I haven’t found a way to get it. Also, Safari doesn’t implement the Web Extension API’s browser.runtime.getBrowserInfo(), unlike Firefox. I haven’t tested it yet, but I’m considering checking the user agent string, though I’m not sure how reliable that would be. Use Case Some users use my Safari extension as a web development tool and want to enable some features exclusively in Safari Technology Preview, while using other features only in standard Safari. If I could detect which browser is in use, I could provide the appropriate functionality for them.

JavaScript to externally automate Webpage operation
I am a newby to JavaScript, suggested to me to use to automate the task of opening of a Web page, selecting three internal buttons in sequence to download the underlying chart data. I have created the App via Automator on macOS, to run the Script, successfully open the Web Page, but cannot find a way to select and click() on the buttons. Can someone please help me. Robert. Why does my website header look different in Safari on macOS compared to Windows browsers?
Hi Developers, I am working on a small project and I noticed that my website header looks different in Safari on macOS compared to Windows browsers like Chrome and Edge. In Safari, the header text and spacing look slightly shifted (screenshot attached). On Windows browsers, everything looks perfectly aligned.
