Removing SwiftUI View from hierarchy
In a UIKit application, removing a view from the hierarchy is straightforward—we simply call myView.removeFromSuperview(). This not only removes myView from the UI but also deallocates any associated memory. Now that I'm transitioning to SwiftUI, I'm struggling to understand the recommended way to remove a view from the hierarchy, given SwiftUI's declarative nature. I understand that in SwiftUI, we declare everything that should be displayed. However, once a view is rendered, what is the correct way to remove it? Should all UI elements be conditionally controlled to determine whether they appear or not? Below is an example of how I’m currently handling this, but it doesn’t feel like the right approach for dynamically removing a view at runtime. Can someone guide me on the best way to remove views in SwiftUI? struct ContentView: View { @State private var isVisible = true var body: some View { VStack { if isVisible { // set this to false to remove TextView? Text("Hello, SwiftUI!") .padding() } Button("Toggle View") { ... } } } }

Putting buttons over SwiftUI map view
Has anyone gotten custom buttons to work on top of tvOS Map()? I've tried many variations of FocusState focusSection .defaultFocus() and as soon as the map appears at startup the buttons never get focus again. They are on a ZStack over the map. I could post code but truthfully nothing works for me. I'm wondering if anyone has successfully put focusable buttons on top of the map view.

Persistent 'buildExpression unavailable' error in ContentView with switch/AppState
Hi everyone, I'm encountering a persistent build error in a SwiftUI iOS app and I'm running out of ideas. Setup: My ContentView uses two @EnvironmentObjects (GameViewModel, SettingsStore). The GameViewModel has an AppState enum (.welcome, .setup, .game). The ContentView body uses a switch viewModel.currentAppState (wrapped in a Group) to display one of three different views (WelcomeView, SetupView, GameView). Navigation between states is triggered by changing viewModel.currentAppState within withAnimation blocks in the respective subviews. Problem: I consistently get the build error 'buildExpression' is unavailable: this expression does not conform to 'View' pointing to the lines inside the .setup and .game cases of the switch statement in ContentView. Code (ContentView.swift - Simplified Test Version that STILL fails): // Zweck: Steuert die Hauptnavigation basierend auf AppState // KORRIGIERTE VERSION OHNE .animation(...) am Ende import SwiftUI struct ContentView: View { // Zugriff auf das ViewModel, um den AppState zu lesen @EnvironmentObject var viewModel: GameViewModel // SettingsStore wird von untergeordneten Views benötigt @EnvironmentObject var settingsStore: SettingsStore var body: some View { // Optional: Group um das switch-Statement, kann manchmal helfen (kannst du auch weglassen) Group { // Wechsle die Ansicht basierend auf viewModel.currentAppState switch viewModel.currentAppState { case .welcome: WelcomeView() // EnvironmentObjects an WelcomeView übergeben .environmentObject(viewModel) .environmentObject(settingsStore) // Übergangsanimation .transition(.opacity) case .setup: SetupView() // EnvironmentObjects an SetupView übergeben .environmentObject(viewModel) .environmentObject(settingsStore) // Übergangsanimation .transition(.asymmetric(insertion: .move(edge: .trailing), removal: .move(edge: .leading))) case .game: GameView() // EnvironmentObjects an GameView übergeben .environmentObject(viewModel) .environmentObject(settingsStore) // Übergangsanimation .transition(.asymmetric(insertion: .move(edge: .trailing), removal: .move(edge: .leading))) } } // Ende der optionalen Group // !!! WICHTIG: KEIN .animation(...) Modifier hier !!! } } // Vorschau struct ContentView_Previews: PreviewProvider { static var previews: some View { // Erstelle Instanzen für die Vorschau let vmWelcome = GameViewModel() vmWelcome.currentAppState = .welcome let vmSetup = GameViewModel() vmSetup.currentAppState = .setup let vmGame = GameViewModel() vmGame.currentAppState = .game vmGame.currentCard = Card.defaultCards.first let settings = SettingsStore() // Zeige verschiedene Zustände in der Vorschau an Group { ContentView() .environmentObject(vmWelcome) .environmentObject(settings) .previewDisplayName("Welcome State") ContentView() .environmentObject(vmSetup) .environmentObject(settings) .previewDisplayName("Setup State") ContentView() .environmentObject(vmGame) .environmentObject(settings) .previewDisplayName("Game State") } } } Troubleshooting Steps Taken (No Success): Ensured correct placement of .environmentObject modifiers on subviews within the switch. Removed a previous .animation() modifier applied directly to the switch. Ensured state changes triggering transitions are wrapped in withAnimation. Wrapped the switch in a Group. Multiple "Clean Build Folder". Deleted entire Derived Data folder (with Xcode closed). Restarted Xcode and the Mac multiple times. Deleted and recreated ContentView.swift with the code above. Crucially: The errors persist even when replacing WelcomeView(), - - - --- SetupView(), and GameView() with simple Text("...") views inside the switch cases (as shown in the code snippet above). Environment: Xcode Version: newest macOS Version: newest Question: Does anyone have any idea why the compiler would still fail to type-check this switch structure, even when the views inside are simplified to basic Text? What else could I try to diagnose or fix this? Could it be related to the subviews (SetupView/GameView) potentially having their own NavigationView or complexity, even when replaced by Text in the failing ContentView? Thanks for any suggestions!

Focused Views Get Clipped When Using NavigationStack or Form in Split-Screen Layout on tvOS
When attempting to replicate the tvOS Settings menu layout, where the screen is divided horizontally into two sections, placing a NavigationStack or a Form view on either side of the screen causes focusable views (such as Button, TextField, Toggle, etc.) to be visually clipped when they receive focus and apply the default scaling animation. Specifically: If the Form or NavigationStack is placed on the right side, the left edge of the focused view gets clipped. If placed on the left side, the right edge of the focused view gets clipped. This issue affects any focusable child view inside the Form or NavigationStack when focus scaling is triggered. Example code: struct TVAppMenuMainView: View { var body: some View { VStack { Text("Settings Menu") .font(.title) HStack { VStack { Text("Left Pane") } .frame(width: UIScreen.main.bounds.width * 0.4) // represents only 40% of the screen .frame(maxHeight: .infinity) .padding(.bottom) Divider() NavigationStack { Form { // All the buttons will get cut on the left side when each button is focused Button("First Button"){} Button("Second Button"){} Button("Third Button"){} Button("Forth Button"){} } } } .frame(maxHeight: .infinity) .frame(maxWidth: .infinity) } .background(.ultraThickMaterial) } } How it looks: What I have tried: .clipped modifiers .ignoresSafeArea Modifying the size manually Using just a ScrollView with VStack works as intended, but as soon as NavigationStack or Form are added, the buttons get clipped. This was tested on the latest 18.5 tvOS BETA

ShareLink of a movie is inconsistent
In my app, I have a ShareLink that attempts to share a movie. struct MovieTransferable: Transferable { let url: URL let writeMovie: (URL) -> () static var transferRepresentation: some TransferRepresentation { DataRepresentation( exportedContentType: .movie, exporting: { (movie) in // Write the movie into documents. movie.writeMovie(movie.url) return try! Data(contentsOf: movie.url) }) FileRepresentation( exportedContentType: .movie, exporting: { (movie) in // Write the movie into documents. movie.writeMovie(movie.url) return SentTransferredFile(movie.url) }) } } The ShareLink works if you try to share the movie with the Photos app, Air Drop, and iMessage. If I share to WhatsApp, the movie shows up as empty (zero length), but there's a movie. If I share to Discord, the movie is not displayed at all (only the comment). Instagram posts a dialog saying it won't allow movies and to use the app (why are they even in the ShareLink option for movies?). YouTube processes for a bit and then does nothing (no upload). Are there things that I can do to make the Transferable accepted at more of the end points? It's at fps 30 and I've tried most of the available codec's. The size is the same as the iPhone's screen, so the aspect ratio is a bit odd. However, if I go directly to the app (Discord, etc...) upload from my phone works fine. Any help would be appreciated to make this more viable.

UIPasteControl Not Recognizing Tap
I have an iOS app where I'm trying to paste something previously copied to the user's UIPasteboard. I came across the UIPasteControl as an option for a user to tap to silently paste without having the prompt "Allow Paste" pop up. For some reason, despite having what seemingly is the correct configurations for the UIPasteControl, on testing a tap, nothing is called. I expected override func paste(itemProviders: [NSItemProvider]) to fire, but it does not. Any help would be appreciated as there doesn't seem to be much info anywhere regarding UIPasteControl. import UniformTypeIdentifiers class ViewController: UIViewController { private let pasteControl = UIPasteControl() override func viewDidLoad() { super.viewDidLoad() view.backgroundColor = .systemBackground pasteControl.target = self pasteConfiguration = UIPasteConfiguration(acceptableTypeIdentifiers: [ UTType.text.identifier, UTType.url.identifier, UTType.plainText.identifier ]) view.addSubview(pasteControl) pasteControl.translatesAutoresizingMaskIntoConstraints = false NSLayoutConstraint.activate([ pasteControl.centerXAnchor.constraint(equalTo: view.centerXAnchor), pasteControl.centerYAnchor.constraint(equalTo: view.centerYAnchor), ]) } } extension ViewController { override func paste(itemProviders: [NSItemProvider]) { for provider in itemProviders { if provider.hasItemConformingToTypeIdentifier(UTType.url.identifier) { provider.loadObject(ofClass: URL.self) { [weak self] reading, _ in guard let url = reading as? URL else { return } print(url) } } else if provider.hasItemConformingToTypeIdentifier(UTType.plainText.identifier) { provider.loadObject(ofClass: NSString.self) { [weak self] reading, _ in guard let nsstr = reading as? NSString else { return } let str = nsstr as String if let url = URL(string: str) { print(url) } } } } } }

SwiftUI views lock up after background and sleep for “Designed for iPad” apps
There's an easily reproducible SwiftUI bug on macOS where an app's UI state no longer updates/re-renders for "Designed for iPad" apps (i.e. ProcessInfo.processInfo.isiOSAppOnMac == true). The bug occurs in Xcode and also if the app is running independent of Xcode. The bug occurs when: the user Hides the app (i.e. it goes into the background) the user puts the Mac to sleep (e.g. Apple menu > Sleep) a total of ~60 seconds transpires (i.e. macOS puts the app into the "suspended state") when the app is brought back into the foreground the UI no longer updates properly The only way I have found to fix this is to manually open a new actual full app window via File > New, in which case the app works fine again in the new window. The following extremely simple code in a default Xcode project illustrates the issue: import SwiftUI @main struct staleApp: App { @State private var isBright = true var body: some Scene { WindowGroup() { ZStack { (isBright ? Color.white : Color.black).ignoresSafeArea() Button("TOGGLE") { isBright.toggle(); print("TAPPED") } } .onAppear { print("\(isBright ? "light" : "dark") view appeared") } } } } For the code above, after Hiding the app and putting the computer to sleep for 60 seconds or more, the button no longer swaps views, although the print statements still appear in the console upon tapping the button. Also, while in this buggy state, i can get the view to update to the current state (i.e. the view triggered by the last tap) by manually dragging the corner of the app window to resize the window. But after resizing, the view again does not update upon button tapping until I resize the window again. so it appears the diff engine is mucked or that the Scene or WindowGroup are no longer correctly running on the main thread I have tried rebuilding the entire view hierarchy by updating .id() on views but this approach does NOT work. I have tried many other options/hacks but have not been able to reset the 'view engine' other than opening a new window manually or by using: @Environment(.openWindow) private var openWindow openWindow could be a viable solution except there's no way to programmatically close the old window for isiOSAppOnMac (@Environment(.dismissWindow) private var dismissWindow doesn't work for iOS)

The @Environment(\.dismiss) value in SwiftUI for macOS does not dismiss a sheet presented by an NSWindowController.
I'm wondering what the correct, or recommended, way is to dismiss a SwiftUI that is being presented as a sheet hosted by an NSHostingController. The usual technique of invoking @Environment(\.dismiss) does not appear to work. Consider the code below. An NSWindowController is attempting to display a SwiftUI SettingsView as a sheet. The sheet is correctly presented, but the SettingsView is unable to dismiss itself. I am able to make it work by passing a closure into SettingsView that calls back to the NSWindowController but it's rather convoluted because SettingsView doesn't know the view controller that's hosting it until after SettingsView has been created, which means "finding" that view controller in the window controller to dismiss is more involved than it should be. Is there a better strategy to leverage here? final class MyViewController: NSViewController { @IBAction func buttonClicked(_ sender: NSButton) { if let presenter = window?.contentViewController { presenter.presentAsSheet(NSHostingController(rootView: SettingsView())) } } } struct SettingsView: View { @Environment(\.dismiss) private var dismiss var body: some View { VStack { Button("Cancel", role: .cancel) { dismiss() // This call does not dismiss the sheet. } .keyboardShortcut(.cancelAction) } } } Thank you. macOS 15.4.1 (24E263), Xcode 16.3 (16E140)

The issue of unable to use document type for Mac catalyst project
Hello, I have encountered a question that I hope to receive an answer to. Currently, I am working on a music project for Mac Catalyst and need to enable music files such as FLAC to be opened by right clicking to view my Mac Catalyst app. But currently, I have encountered a problem where I can see my app option in the right-click open mode after debugging the newly created macOS project using the following configuration. But when I created an iOS project and converted it to a Mac Catalyst app, and then modified the info.plist with the same configuration, I couldn't see my app in the open mode after debugging. May I ask how to solve this problem? Do I need to configure any permissions or features in the Mac Catalyst project? I have been searching for a long time but have not found a solution regarding it. Please resolve it, thank you. Here is the configuration of my macOS project: CFBundleDocumentTypes CFBundleTypeExtensions flac CFBundleTypeIconSystemGenerated 1 CFBundleTypeName FLAC Audio File CFBundleTypeRole Viewer LSHandlerRank Default Note: Sandbox permissions have been enabled for both the macOS project and the iOS to Mac Catalyst project. The Mac Catalyst project also has additional permissions for com. apple. security. files. user taught. read write

Trouble using MKAnnotation on a MKMapView
Hi everyone, i'im having troubles using Annotation on a Map View. I have a a core data model called Location that conforms to NSManagedObject from CoreData and MKAnnotation form MapKit, and i'm trying to add an array of Location to a MKMview instance in a UIViewController class, by doing somethhing like this: mapView.addAnnotation(locations), but xcode compliants with a strange error which says Argument type '[Location]' does not conform to expected type 'MKAnnotation'. it's strange to me because my Location class conforms to MKAnnotation protocol and i implemented the protocol's methods (coordinate, title, subtitle). Please can anyone help me how to fix this issues. Thank you all

What is com.apple.TextInput.rdt?
Hello, community, I'm using an HTML editor in a .NET MAUI application running on macOS, and I'm encountering some unexpected behavior during text editing: Double-click text selection disappears after approximately one second. Styles randomly revert or are applied to the wrong text unexpectedly. It appears to be related to macOS spell checking. When using editable elements (, or with contenteditable), the system enables spell checking by default. During this, MAUI attempts to communicate with a system process: com.apple.TextInput.rdt, which is not running, leading to repeated errors like: Error Domain=NSCocoaErrorDomain Code=4099 "The connection to service named com.apple.TextInput.rdt was invalidated: failed at lookup with error 3 - No such process." Question: What is com.apple.TextInput.rdt, and why might it not be running? Thank you for any help!

[SwiftUI] Gesture Conflict: simultaneousGesture Causes Incorrect Gesture Recognition in iOS 18
Subject: SwiftUI Gesture Conflict in iOS 18: Simultaneous Recognition of Drag and Tap Gestures Description: In SwiftUI on iOS 18 and above, we've identified an issue with gesture handling that affects user experience. When implementing .simultaneousGesture(DragGesture()), the system incorrectly recognizes and processes both drag and tap gestures concurrently, resulting in unintended behavior. Technical Details: Environment: SwiftUI, iOS 18+ Issue: Simultaneous recognition of horizontal drag gestures and vertical scroll/tap gestures Current Behavior: Both vertical and horizontal scrolling occur simultaneously when using .simultaneousGesture(DragGesture()) Expected Behavior: Gestures should be properly disambiguated to prevent concurrent scrolling in multiple directions Impact: This behavior significantly impacts user experience, particularly in custom carousel implementations and other UI components that rely on precise gesture handling. The simultaneous recognition of both gestures creates a confusing and unpredictable interaction pattern. Steps to Reproduce: Create a SwiftUI view with horizontal scrolling (e.g., custom carousel) Implement .simultaneousGesture(DragGesture()) Add tap gesture recognition to child views Run on iOS 18 Attempt to scroll horizontally Observed Result: Both horizontal dragging and vertical scrolling/tapping are recognized and processed simultaneously, creating an inconsistent user experience. Expected Result: The system should properly disambiguate between horizontal drag gestures and vertical scroll/tap gestures, allowing only one type of gesture to be recognized at a time based on the user's intent. Please let me know if you need any additional information or reproduction steps.

Animate layout change
I want to show a view, where the user can add or remove items shown as icons, which are sorted in two groups: squares and circles. When there are only squares, they should be shown in one row: [] [] [] When there are so many squares that they don’t fit horizontally, a (horizontal) scrollview will be used, with scroll-indicator always shown to indicate that not all squares are visible. When there are only circles, they also should be shown in one row: () () () When there are so many circles that they don’t fit horizontally, a (horizontal) scrollview will be used, with scroll-indicator always shown to indicate that not all circles are visible. When there a few squares and a few circles, they should be shown adjacent in one row: [] [] () () When there are so many squares and circles that they don’t fit horizontally, they should be shown in two rows, squares on top, circles below: [] [] [] () () () When there are either too many squares or too many circles (or both) to fit horizontally, one common (horizontal) scrollview will be used, with scroll-indicator always shown to indicate that not all items are visible. I started with ViewThatFits: (see first code block) { let squares = HStack { ForEach(model.squares, id: \.self) { square in Image(square) } } let circles = HStack { ForEach(model.circles, id: \.self) { circle in Image(circle) } } let oneLine = HStack { squares circles } let twoLines = VStack { squares circles } let scrollView = ScrollView(.horizontal) { twoLines }.scrollIndicators(.visible) ViewThatFits(in: .horizontal) { oneLine twoLines scrollView.clipped() } } While this works in general, it doesn’t animate properly. When the user adds or removes an image the model gets updated, (see second code block) withAnimation(Animation.easeIn(duration: 0.25)) { model.squares += image } and the view animates with the existing images either making space for a new appearing square/circle, or moving together to close the gap where an image disappeared. This works fine as long as ViewThatFits returns the same view. However, when adding 1 image leads to ViewThatFits switching from oneLine to twoLines, this switch is not animated. The circles jump to the new position under the squares, instead of sliding there. I searched online for a solution, but this seems to be a known problem of ViewThatFits. It doesn't animate when it switches... (tbc)

Translate extension bahvior
DESCRIPTION OF PROBLEM We need to add an implementation that will have the same swipe/scroll behavior as the Apple Translator extension, here is the code that we are currently using: import SwiftUI import TranslationUIProvider @main class TranslationProviderExtension: TranslationUIProviderExtension { required init() {} var body: some TranslationUIProviderExtensionScene { TranslationUIProviderSelectedTextScene { context in VStack { TranslationProviderView(context: context) } } } } struct TranslationProviderView: View { @State var context: TranslationUIProviderContext init(context c: TranslationUIProviderContext) { context = c } var body: some View { ScrollableSheetView() } } struct ScrollableSheetView: View { var body: some View { ScrollView { VStack(spacing: 20) { ForEach(0..<50) { index in Text("Item (index)") .padding() .frame(maxWidth: .infinity) .background(Color.blue.opacity(0.1)) .cornerRadius(8) } } .padding() } .padding() } } Using this code, on the first extension run, swipe up will expand the extension (which is OK) but swiping down on the expanded state of the extension works only as a scroll instead of swiping the extension from expanded mode back to compact mode. STEPS TO REPRODUCE Select a text in Safari Tap on Translate in the contextual menu Swipe up on the text ->the extension expands into full mode Swipe down->only scrolls work, I cannot swipe the extension from full mode to compact mode. Expected behavior: when i swipe down on the expanded extension, the extension should get into compact mode, not continuously scroll down.

VisionOS custom hover effect and click sound
I have created a custom hover effect per this WWDC video and many other examples on the Net: https://developer.apple.com/videos/play/wwdc2024/10152/ I can get the button to expand when looked at within a VisionOS device and it will invoke a tap event when tapped but there is no click sound like a normal SwiftUI button does in VisionOS! I can't for the life of me figure out why. Any help would be appreciated!

UIScrollView in UIViewControllerRepresentable - UI freezes when content touches bottom SafeArea
The SwiftUI ScrollView lacks some features I need and so I created a custom MyScrollView based on UIScrollView wrapped within a UIViewControllerRepresentable. While this works fine in general I know came across a very strange problem: When MyScrollView is used in a sheet and its content touches bottom SafeArea, the UI freezes as soon as the should be displayed. The code below shows the problem as well in preview as on the simulator and on devices. Please note that the code is tuned do the display size of an iPhone 16 Pro. When running on different devices one might need to adjust height of the Color.yellow. In the demo code the UI freezes if the Color.yellow has a height between 738 to 771 pixels. Every other height is fine. Is there something wrong with my implementation of MyScrollView? When using ScrollView instead, everything works fine. Code: struct ContentView: View { @State private var showSheet: Bool = false var body: some View { ZStack { Button("Show Sheet") { showSheet = true } } .sheet(isPresented: $showSheet) { VStack { Text("Some Header Content") MyScrollView { VStack { Color.yellow //.frame(height: 737) // works .frame(height: 738) // does NOT works // ... //.frame(height: 771) // does NOT works //.frame(height: 772) // works } } .ignoresSafeArea() } } } } struct MyScrollView<Content: View>: UIViewControllerRepresentable { let content: Content init(@ViewBuilder content: () -> Content) { self.content = content() } func makeUIViewController(context: Context) -> UIViewController { let scrollViewVC = UIViewController() scrollViewVC.view.backgroundColor = .clear let scrollView = UIScrollView() scrollView.backgroundColor = .clear let contentVC = UIHostingController(rootView: self.content) contentVC.view.backgroundColor = .clear context.coordinator.contentVC = contentVC context.coordinator.scrollView = scrollView scrollView.translatesAutoresizingMaskIntoConstraints = false scrollViewVC.view.addSubview(scrollView) NSLayoutConstraint.activate([ scrollView.topAnchor.constraint(equalTo: scrollViewVC.view.topAnchor), scrollView.bottomAnchor.constraint(equalTo: scrollViewVC.view.bottomAnchor), scrollView.leadingAnchor.constraint(equalTo: scrollViewVC.view.leadingAnchor), scrollView.trailingAnchor.constraint(equalTo: scrollViewVC.view.trailingAnchor) ]) contentVC.willMove(toParent: scrollViewVC) scrollViewVC.addChild(contentVC) contentVC.view.translatesAutoresizingMaskIntoConstraints = false scrollView.addSubview(contentVC.view) NSLayoutConstraint.activate([ contentVC.view.topAnchor.constraint(equalTo: scrollView.contentLayoutGuide.topAnchor), contentVC.view.bottomAnchor.constraint(equalTo: scrollView.contentLayoutGuide.bottomAnchor), contentVC.view.leadingAnchor.constraint(equalTo: scrollView.contentLayoutGuide.leadingAnchor), contentVC.view.trailingAnchor.constraint(equalTo: scrollView.contentLayoutGuide.trailingAnchor), contentVC.view.widthAnchor.constraint(equalTo: scrollView.frameLayoutGuide.widthAnchor) ]) contentVC.didMove(toParent: scrollViewVC) return scrollViewVC } func updateUIViewController(_ uiViewController: UIViewController, context: Context) { context.coordinator.contentVC?.rootView = content } func makeCoordinator() -> Coordinator { return Coordinator() } class Coordinator { var contentVC: UIHostingController<Content>? var scrollView: UIScrollView? init() { //... } } } #Preview { ContentView() }

SwiftUI Button fade animation happens with a delay when in ScrollView
When we place a Button inside a ScrollView , the fade animation of the button is delayed, so most users won't see it I think. You can see this in the trivial example struct ContentView: View { var body: some View { ScrollView { Button { // empty } label: { Text("Fade animation test") } } } } Is there any way to opt out of this behavior? In UIKit, this was also the default behavior, but you could always change it by overriding touchesShouldCancel method. I think I can probably do that by rewriting an animation completely with some custom ButtonStyle or by rewriting a Button component completely, but it doesn't seem like a good solution to me, as I want the native look and feel (in case of button animation it is pretty easy to mimic though). And also for some components, like lists, Apple has already implemented the correct behavior by themselves somehow.
